Every automaker has a unique history. Unless specifically requested we probably won’t delve into Dodge history when you come to see us, but we do think it is a worthwhile topic and we want to share a little bit about Dodge during the time of World Word II on our blog today.

Here are a few things that Dodge contributed to the Allies’ war efforts in addition to providing stellar automobiles :

  • Dodge’s largest Detroit based factory was converted into military initiatives production almost overnight after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. Many special projects were worked on at the factory in addition to producing engines for all branches of the armed forces. These thousands of engines for trucks and cars included engines for the Dodge WC-56 combat vehicle.
  • Workers at the factory were doubled to prepare special materials including mobile radar antennas and gyrocompasses as well as components for bombers and guns. With 49,000 workers the plant constructed its own schools, hospital and fire department.
  • Dodge started to put together a second plant in Chicago in 1942. At the time the large factory was the biggest building in the world and 75 percent of its employees were women. The factory was specifically designed to make 18-cylinder engines that produced 2500-hp. These engines were used to power the B-29 Superfortress bomber.
